Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my accommodations, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by engaging in small conversations with others who were in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I discovered that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, there’s no need for concern! There will be plenty of social events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re bound to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies supported me through this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can virtually assure you that others are grappling with it too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
