Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year teeming with personal development, obstacles, and delight! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the academic term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, today I can assertively say I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this institution and in my program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I realize? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic load and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost guarantee there are others who are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain continuous communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support systems until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps previously – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the diverse support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
