Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was far from what my formerly shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, trials, and enjoyment! But what insights have I acquired, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. What did I learn? It’s advantageous to take that initial leap at the year’s beginning. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, no need for concern! Numerous ice-breaking events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, remain true to yourself. With such a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find something confusing, others probably do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson learned during the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had begun sooner. I spoke of taking leaps – one such leap was becoming a well-being representative for the year. This opportunity allowed me to build connections with the faculty, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for your own growth! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness about university are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to derive joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
