By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it could be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to venture out and engage with others. Now, I can confidently state that I’ve built some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or feel nervous, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to assist you in meeting others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that apprehensive emotions about university are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the available support from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite the stress of exams and deadlines.
