Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I see an academic year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to connect you with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are likely to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being offered. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various forms of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to savor my experience alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
