Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into accommodations, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too scared to emerge and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by striking up casual conversations with those facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? Taking a risk at the beginning of the year is advisable. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be countless ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and level of complexity. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Keep in mind, everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, others likely share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
