Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was nervous, apprehensive, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year full of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your top worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out and meeting new people. Today, though, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the substantial workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in similar circumstances. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are puzzled too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Ask for assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
