By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Rewind to October 2022, ten months back, when I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. The prospect of stepping into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously timid and reserved self. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first, and most intimidating, obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a primary worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too scared to step outside and mingle. However, reflecting today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with light conversations with individuals in alike circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I found that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events ready to assist you in connecting with others. I also picked up that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper climb from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a setting can be taxing on your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something confuses you, I can nearly guarantee that others are puzzled too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your fellow students and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and understand that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until near the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this segment of university is to seize the support available. You can never have excess assistance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support channels provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment, regardless of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
