Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal advancement, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of commencing university can certainly feel quite overwhelming, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a leap at the commencement of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in several respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. There were a few factors that aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation as you. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that several others are also baffled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are eager for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did embark on one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance being provided to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and within university, are generally unfounded and can be eased with the vast array of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has equipped me with the ability to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
