By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into such an environment was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve developed a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always simple for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same position. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are also struggling. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Do not hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance that is available to you. You can never receive too much!

Ultimately, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to delight in my experience alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
