By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Reflecting back ten months to October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was accustomed to. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing tasks was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your largest concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and greet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I have developed a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of small talk with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I found it’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! Numerous ice-breakers and events will help you connect with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be your true self. With the diversity of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another challenge faced was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a demanding environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies helped me cope with this feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally perplexed. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students may face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our challenges throughout the year. Although I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke of taking chances at the onset; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this part of university is to seize the help that’s available. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are mostly unwarranted and can be mitigated by the extensive support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy, even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
