By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most overwhelming hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and for prospective students, it might pose a significant worry. On my arrival day at my accommodation, just days ahead of the classes, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and socialize. However, I can now proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others in similar positions. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that taking a risk at the onset of the year is beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to aid in making connections with others. I also discovered the importance of being true to yourself. With a myriad of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the coursework and its complexity. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you might observe classmates studying and feel as if you don’t measure up. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t click, there’s a good chance others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are empathetic and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support system until later in the year, but I regret not doing it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one at the year’s beginning by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has illustrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support systems provided by both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and taught me how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
