By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey of personal development, trials, and a lot of joy! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be among the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my move-in day, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what insight did I gain? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a rise in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in this type of setting can test your self-assurance; you may notice others studying and feel inadequate. A couple of elements helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also find it challenging. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support options afforded by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
