Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future as I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my formerly shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back on the past year, I recognize a path rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too anxious to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all started with light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a risk at the start of the year is advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your self-confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel less capable. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment in myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
