Back in October 2022, just ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking such a significant leap was far from what my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a path of personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is often one of the more frightening facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my living quarters, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel subpar. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost guarantee that others are too. So, do seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the hurdles that students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
