Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was making new friends. This is often one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to go out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual chats with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to aid you in connecting with others. Additionally, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel like you don’t measure up. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and grasp the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in regular touch with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with the staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that apprehensive feelings about university are usually unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
