Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. Among the diverse individuals across the course and university, you will surely find others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I encountered was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A few aspects helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost guarantee there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the resources available. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the vast support options available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it’s shown me how to have fun amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
