Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university is frequently one of the most daunting, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. However, now, I can proudly assert that I’ve built some of the best friendships of my life here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others like you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others do not either. So, seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My main takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the many support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
