Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey towards a degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step outside and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly state that I have made some of the greatest friends here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with people. I also understood that being true to yourself is essential. With such a varied group of individuals across the program and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded peer groups.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being placed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few things helped me navigate those feelings, one being the realization that everyone is in a similar situation. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased by the various support resources offered by faculty and other students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
