Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant concern. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve found some of the best friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. What did I take away from this? It’s crucial to take a leap at the year’s beginning. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being genuine is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone faces the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others probably don’t as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial insight in the first year. Seek help from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
