Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I commenced my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming connections. This is frequently a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and mingle. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in alike situations. What have I realized? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, no need to fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to aid your interaction. Also, embrace your true self. With the plethora of diverse individuals at university, you’ll surely find those who connect with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and even more from the first to the second term. This atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; it’s normal to feel less competent compared to others. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, seek assistance. This is vital during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and faculty!

The faculty within the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and fully comprehend the challenges students face. They keep the lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t tap into the pastoral support until later, but I regret not doing so earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me engage with the faculty, a golden opportunity. There are countless avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s advantageous! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

This year has demonstrated to me that anxieties about university life are often baseless and can be eased with backing from staff and peers. I have learned that I am never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and submission deadlines.
