Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I commenced my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, trials, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This is often the most daunting element of entering university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to step outside and interact with others. Now, I confidently affirm that I have forged some of the best friendships at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? It’s essential to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feeling at ease, don’t fret! There are countless ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, strive to be yourself. With such a varied group of people in the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely unclear to others as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for support!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They express understanding and maintain lines of communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of pastoral support until the year concluded, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become acquainted with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway is to embrace the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year demonstrated to me that apprehensions about university are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with support from both staff and fellow students. It revealed that I am never solitary and how to find pleasure amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
