Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was an experience my formerly shy and introverted self had not encountered before. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with others experiencing similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the initiative at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be a multitude of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one quality, it’s authenticity. With such a wide array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can take a toll on your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others share your confusion. So, do not hesitate to seek help. This could be the most vital lesson learned in the first year. Turn to your peers and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the extensive support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to have fun while managing stressors like examinations and deadlines.
