Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I embarked on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a prevalent worry for incoming university students. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too hesitant to introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with others facing the same experience. The takeaway? Take a chance as the year begins. If you don’t feel prepared, that’s okay! There are plenty of ice-breaker activities designed to help you connect. Be genuine, and you’ll discover others like you.

Another obstacle was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. This can impact your self-esteem, particularly when you start to compare yourself to peers. Remember, everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re confused about a concept, odds are that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is vital during your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware of student challenges. They keep us informed about our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which helped me build connections with the faculty. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s advantageous! Make the most of the resources provided. You can never receive too much support!

This year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through support from both staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the stress from exams and deadlines.
