Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Facing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was ready for. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening aspects of starting university, and if you’re considering this path, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I discovered? It’s advisable to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I’ve also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a vibrant mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity and complexity of the coursework. There was a striking leap from A-levels, and even more so between the first and second terms. Existing in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What proved beneficial for me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are having the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the struggles students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open with us throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I alluded to taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support resources available from both staff and peers. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
