Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most formidable challenges was socializing. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your primary worries. On the day I moved into my residence, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this institution and within this program. I have created a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you bond with others. I also discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With a myriad of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be tough for your self-esteem; you might notice others studying and feel less capable. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty within Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the difficulties students endure. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned previously about taking chances – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the many support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has illuminated for me that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
