Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was something my previously timid and reserved nature was not used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path rich with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re considering this as a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the full day confined to my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, reflecting on today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always a plus. If you feel somewhat unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to foster connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and within the university, you’re sure to find individuals with similar mindsets.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. It was definitely a notch up from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you there are others who find it puzzling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might just be the most crucial lesson you can learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter hurdles. They show understanding towards students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I embraced one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both pre and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the variety of support choices provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
