Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t exactly something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to doing. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted by the thought of stepping out and greeting others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with conviction that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I have found a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. The diversity of individuals across the program and the university means you are sure to discover peers like you.

Another challenge I faced was the heavy workload and the complexity of the content. There was notably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your self-assurance; you might notice others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the realization that everyone shares your struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are several others who do not understand either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about making leaps – at the beginning of the year, I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is an incredibly valuable opportunity. There are numerous ways to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being extended to you. You can never have too much!

In broader terms, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically irrational and can be alleviated through the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
