In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed by nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not a routine experience for my previously shy and introverted self. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is indeed one of the more daunting parts of entering university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, far too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, today, I can confidently assert that I have forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the year’s beginning is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who click with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same issue. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy and keep open communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the help available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the numerous support services provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and how to balance enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
