Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on the year, I notice a journey characterized by personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forging friendships. This is definitely one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, feeling too intimidated to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I learned that taking an initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to foster your engagement with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one principle, it should be to remain authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you are bound to connect with people who resonate with your vibe.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes affect your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in navigating that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are equally bewildered. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to develop in your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – at the start of the year, I did take a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, whether prior to or during university, are nearly always irrational and can be alleviated by the wealth of support resources from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated in my experiences, and I’ve also learned how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
