Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more distressing components of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your most significant worries. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, however, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and in some respects, there was an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always favorable for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are a handful of others who are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and comprehend that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain constant engagement with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had sooner. I touched on taking chances earlier – I made one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!
Generally speaking, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to take pleasure in my experiences alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
