Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of embarking on university life, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room as I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with those in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be your authentic self. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are several others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students may struggle. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one at the beginning of the year by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to establish connections with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your experience! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully leverage the support that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the numerous support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has equipped me with the knowledge to enjoy my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
