Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Undertaking such a significant step was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often constitutes one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the notion of venturing out and introducing myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always the wisest course. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker occasions and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it is yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to come across like-minded people.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting is not always straightforward for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you find yourself puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

That leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students may struggle. They show empathy towards students and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t quite utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this past year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
