Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! So, what have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my arrival day at my accommodation, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t be concerned! There will be ample ice-breaking gatherings to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that staying true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is on the same journey. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and grasp the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with our situations and maintain constant dialogue regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the assistance available from faculty and peers. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to savor my experiences despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
