Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh, first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might rank among your significant worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with others in similar positions. So, what has been my takeaway? I learned that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant shift from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can be a toll on your confidence; you may witness others studying and feel as though you’re not measuring up. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are just as confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They wish for you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance being provided. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy life even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
