Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more formidable aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to leave and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert confidently that I’ve built some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with simple conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for the year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the multitude of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
