Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days ahead of the term start, I spent the entire day in my room, too nervous to step out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a supportive family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s always advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker situations and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find others like yourself.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable upgrade from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you there are others who feel the same. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy even alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
