Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student perusing this, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to foster connections with others. I’ve also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel lesser. A few strategies helped me traverse that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are also in the dark. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the outset; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!
Generally speaking, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by the staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
