Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Dipping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forging friendships. This is one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before the semester began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out to meet people. Today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the finest friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with others experiencing similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always preferable to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities are available to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a notable transition from A-levels, and in many aspects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly tap into the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have an excess of help!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be eased through the numerous support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
