By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships, a frequent worry for incoming university students. On my initial day in my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to approach anyone. Now, I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, largely by engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you’re hesitant, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with your peers. Being authentic is essential, as you’ll discover many individuals like you within the diverse student community.

Another significant challenge was the academic workload and level of difficulty, which was a notable increase compared to A-levels, especially from the first to the second term. It can be disheartening to observe others studying and feel inferior. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Seeking assistance is vital in your first year, from both classmates and faculty.

The staff within the Materials department are exceptional, genuinely invested in your success and sympathetic towards student difficulties. They ensure communication is maintained throughout the year regarding any concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff, presenting a valuable opportunity. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take. Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never alone and can still have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
