By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more challenging elements of transitioning to university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your largest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire time confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was striking up small conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some regards, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment isn’t always straightforward for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who also do not grasp it. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are dedicated to your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance that is made available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to have fun amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
