Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gathered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assert with certainty that I have forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this course. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample occasions and events to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. The course and university are filled with diverse individuals; you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggles. If something confuses you, I can almost guarantee there are others who are equally puzzled. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are empathetic towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
