Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Stepping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously bashful and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a plethora of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting features of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it unclear. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to internalize in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being presented to you. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has imparted upon me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the numerous support mechanisms available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment in tandem with stressors such as exams and deadlines.
