Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Yet, here I am today, able to assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was assuredly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even bigger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you find something puzzling, I can almost guarantee there are others who are equally confused. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be alleviated by the various support resources accessible through staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
