Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I can see a year infused with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you are a prospective student, it may be one of your major concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with people in comparable situations. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that it’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and difficulty of the content. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I talked about taking leaps earlier – I undertook one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much!

In sum, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the diverse support mechanisms available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to truly enjoy myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
