Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is vital. With such a wide array of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something confusing, there’s a good chance others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson during the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They resonate with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your own well-being! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to relish my experience despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
