Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future as I got ready to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey abundant with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may pose a considerable concern for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here now, I can confidently affirm that I have formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. What did I learn? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse range of people across the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded individuals.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Look for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking chances initially; I took one by becoming a year wellness representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings, both before and during university, are frequently groundless and can be mitigated with the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
