Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and what is my current status?
One of the early and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and socialize. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I learn? It’s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or feel uncomfortable, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking activities available to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can influence your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something confusing, others probably are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson during the first year. Reach out for assistance from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support options available from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
