Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back at the last academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was cultivating friendships. This frequently stands as one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, just days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within this university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that making the effort at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and campus, you are sure to encounter those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was certainly a transition from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can shake your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Request help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this element of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings experienced before and during university are often ungrounded and can be eased with the diverse support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
