Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not a familiar territory for my previously introverted and quiet self. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet anyone. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve made some incredible friends at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with peers in analogous circumstances. What’s the takeaway? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through this challenge, one being the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I assure you others are, too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and ensure consistent communication about our challenges. I didn’t leverage pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referenced taking chances before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role facilitated my connection with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to engage with staff, and that’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the support from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
